Regina, June 29, 2023 – A groundbreaking ceremony will be held today to announce the construction of a new francophone elementary school that will serve families residing in northern Regina.

"Regina's Fransaskois have been waiting for this moment for many years," said Alpha Barry, Chair of the Conseil scolaire fransaskois (CSF). “Needless to say, we are very happy that the construction project has finally started. This new school will benefit our families and our community in so many ways. »

The expected opening date for the new school is January 2025. The Government of Saskatchewan is investing approximately $23.5 million in this new school. The federal government, meanwhile, is investing $3.9 million for community spaces. The new school is part of a memorandum of understanding signed between CÉF and the Government of Saskatchewan which provides for the construction of three new French-language schools in the province in time for the start of the school year in September 2025. The Regina school is the first for which construction has begun.

CÉF expects to experience a similar day for the communities of Saskatoon and Prince Albert as soon as possible.

Conseil des écoles fransaskoises (CÉF) CEO and Director of Education, Ronald Ajavon, welcomes the construction of this first new French-language school in Saskatchewan in more than 20 years: “We look forward to welcoming students from Regina to this new school. A day like today means much for Regina but must be reproduced quickly in Saskatoon and Prince Albert where land searches for the construction of new schools are currently underway. CÉF needs local schools and determining where they are to be located is crucial. »

The new school will have an estimated area of 3,547 square meters and is designed to accommodate up to 325 students. The facility will also include a 51-space daycare. The Government of Canada will provide $3.9 million to build an 828 square meter Francophone community space within the new school. The construction contract was awarded to Quorex Construction.
